1. Keep a healthy and balanced diet (especially with sulfur-rich foods)
As we alluded to earlier in this post, the food you eat is a major contributor to the odor of your gas and even how much gas you have each day. When it comes to being healthy, a balanced diet is always helpful. In this respect, managing bad gas is no different.
Foods high in sulfur are often the culprit for making gas reek like rotten eggs. Although often gut healthy, veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage are sulfur-rich and often to blame for gross smelling gas.
Other sulfur-rich foods include garlic, onions, legumes, dried fruit, nuts, beer, kombucha, and wine. Even proteins, like eggs, meat, and fish– which are all high in sulfur–may be especially problematic. When it comes to sulfur-rich foods, balance is best. So if you’re going on a first date maybe consider saving the sulfur-rich foods for another time.

2. Lay off the lactose
According to the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia, “Lactose intolerance is very common in adults. It is rarely dangerous. About 30 million American adults have some degree of lactose intolerance by age 20.”
If you struggle with gas that stinks, then it may be worth giving this staggering statistic a second glance. Lactose intolerance is extremely common and can cause equally extreme odors in your gas!
Patricia Raymond, MD, a Virginia Beach-based gastroenterologist and assistant professor of clinical internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, explains that “lactose passes through the small intestine without being absorbed, traveling downstream to the colon, where trillions of bacteria have a little party,". The effect is smelly gas, since milk and certain cheeses also have a high sulfur content (which is often responsible for the odors in your gas).

Beans contain a healthy amount of fiber which definitely does not help reduce gas. But more importantly, beans contain raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs). These RFOs are a group of sugars that are at least partially responsible for the bloating and gas that can occur after a beany meal. Lentils, legumes, and cruciferous veggies all also contain RFOs and can lead to you feeling bloated and gassy.
The main reason for this is that the human gastrointestinal tract lacks an important enzyme needed to break down and digest these sugars. So if you are eating a beany meal, we advise you to eat slowly to try and reduce the gas build up.
