Why do some farts smell like rotten eggs?

There’s a wide range of farts that we all can experience from time to time: silent, loud, smelly, etc., but sometimes we wonderwhy some of these farts smell like rotten eggs?

The questions that jump to mind are:

Is it because I ate eggs?

Is there something in particular that I ate?

Does it have to do with my digestive system?

The short answer to all these questions is essentially the same: yes.The farts that smell like rotten eggs are often due to the sulfur-rich foods that we consume. Sulfur-rich foods include garlic, onions, legumes, dried fruit, nuts, beer, kombucha, and wine.Even proteins, like eggs, meat, and fish, which are all high in sulfur, may be especially problematic.

Now, we understand that some people have far worse gas symptoms from eating these sulfur-rich foods than others, so why is that?

All our bodies are different, and some people have a gastrointestinal tract that breaks down these foods better than others. Our digestive system will use bacteria to process and ferment the food that we eat. The end result is gas, which can be composed more of methane or hydrogen sulfide.

In layman’s terms, the person who farts methane is not so stinky. The person who farts hydrogen sulfide is stinky.

Essentially, if you are a hydrogen sulfide farter, then you have to be careful with your farts. There are two ways to deal with this.

#1 - WATCH YOUR DIET

Be careful of dairy products, red meat, and vegetables. The challenge with this method is that many of these foods are the delicious foods that we love to eat on a daily basis. Why would I want to change that?

The great news is that there is another way.

#2 - WEAR TOOTLES UNDERWEAR

Wait… wear a special underwear?! That’s right, the tootles team developed a lab-tested underwear that uses an activated carbon liner that is embedded in the fabric of the underwear. It is just as comfortable, if not more comfortable, than the normal underwear that we wear on a daily basis.

The gas passes through the activated carbon and goes through a process called “adsorption” (this is distinct from “absorption”).The smelly part of your fart is filtered out through this tight-knit structured network of activated carbon pores.

The tootles team was able to apply this technology, which is typically used for large industrial purposes, right inside a very comfortable pair of underwear.

CONCLUSION

The next time you are going to bed, a first date, or a social gathering, and you are feeling a little gassy - it might be worth wearing a pair of tootles just to be prepared.
