We’ve all had that uncomfortable, bloated, and “full belly” feeling before, but have you ever wondered why bloating actually happens? Is it bad for your health? Or even: what causes it in the first place?
If so, then you’re in the right place. Bloating has been a hot topic in the health and nutrition sphere for some time now, and we are here to “clear the air” when it comes to bloating.
In this blog we are going to talk about bloating and why, for the most part, it is no cause for real concern.
What is Bloating?
“Bloating”, or a bloated stomach; is simply a feeling of tightness, pressure, or fullness in your belly. This is usually caused by a build up of gasses in the intestines that leaves you with that feeling of tightness or fullness.
The very presence of these gasses is totally normal, and should not be an immediate reason for concern. Bloating is actually a natural part of the digestion process.
According toAustin Gastroenterology, “Most of the time, it [bloating] is perfectly normal and no cause for concern. On rare occasions, it could be an indication of a more serious problem. However, unless your bloating is accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and weight loss, it’s probably nothing to worry about.”
That being said, while bloating has the potential for concern if accompanied by other serious symptoms, for the most part it is simply just a natural part of our bodily process. Moreover, let’s talk about what causes the dreaded bloating in our stomachs.
What Causes Bloating?
As we previously mentioned, some bloating can be caused by various gut diseases or other issues, but there are also a variety of other factors for bloating as well.

That being said, let’s get into some of the various reasons why you may be experiencing bloating.
1. Food Sensitivities
This is probably the biggest factor for bloating in most people. Our diet has a big part to play in our overall health, especially when it comes to bloating and overall gut health.
It is extremely beneficial to identify any food sensitivities or intolerances you might have. One of the best methods of helping improve your gut health is to cut out foods that create bloating in your stomach. If you eat those “highly sensitive: foods, it can increase the gas in your stomach because your intestines are having a difficult time digesting. In other words, try to avoid foods that create bloating in your stomach.
2. Lack of Fiber in Your Diet
Studies by theNational Library of Medicine have shown that a high fiber diet can decrease bloating over time. In order to decrease bloating, one of the best methods is to continuously add high-fiber foods. Some of these high-fiber foods include fruits and vegetables, in particular, broccoli and lentils.
The interesting thing about these high-fiber foods is that it increases the amount of gas you pass. Now, that may be something you want to avoid at all costs (the passing gas, that is), but there is a win-win solution here. 3. Consuming “Diet” Products
Consuming diet products or Sugar substitutes (otherwise known as sugar alcohols) are found in many diet foods and sodas and can cause you to feel bloated and uncomfortable. Ingesting too much of these or any artificial substances can cause bloating.
If you love to have sugar substitutes such as Splenda or regularly enjoy diet soda, maybe try to cut back to decrease bloating and gut pain.
Is Bloating Bad for My Health?
Again, it is always best to consult your doctor if your bloating is severe and accompanied by other symptoms. But most likely your bloating is totally natural and nothing to be alarmed by.
