Remove the charcoal filter pad from the underwear and throw your tootles underwear with the rest of your laundry! We recommend cold wash tumble dry low.
The important thing to consider with the pads is that the activated carbon should not be submerged in water. Meaning, don't put these in the wash!
Now we understand that it may seem gross to not wash your pad, but the pad is not touching skin, so you wouldn't have to wash it necessarily.
Now, if you really want to wash the pads, we would suggest just using a wet rag with soap, and just scrubbing the outside fabric. That is the best way to preserve the activated carbon fabric.

This is a case by case situation based on the frequency and deadliness of your farts! The activated carbon essentially "traps" the fart smell, so over time, the carbon fabric will get "clogged" up.
With that being said, we generally see for people who wear tootles every week, that they will need to replace their carbon filter pad every 2-3 months.
In order to maximize the effectiveness of filtering the smell of farts, we had to compromise just a little bit on the feeling of the underwear. It is a little bit bulky, but most people feel like it is still very comfortable.
It is important to readjust the underwear every 6 hours or so to avoid bunching.
